My Teaching Philosophy

Beyond the stage, my passion truly lies in teaching. As your voice teacher, I believe in meeting you exactly where you are on your musical journey. Every lesson is crafted to fit your individual goals, abilities, and musical aspirations, ensuring a flexible approach that caters to your needs. Whether you're just starting out or are an experienced vocalist, my aim is to help you build confidence, refine your technique, and express yourself artistically in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling.

The Foundation for Every Style of Singing

I firmly believe that "Singing is Singing is Singing." What does that mean? It means that good technique is the universal language of all singing. Regardless of the style you want to master—be it classical, pop, jazz, musical theater, or anything in between—the foundational principles of healthy and efficient vocal production remain the same.

And what is this foundation? It's all about allowing your body to do what it naturally does best. Our bodies are incredible instruments that inherently know how to sing. Often, the challenges we face in singing stem from inadvertently "helping" or forcing our voices, leading to tension and limitations. Drawing on principles from the Alexander Technique, our work will focus on releasing these unnecessary interferences. The goal isn't to make your voice do something, but rather to uncover the healthiest and most efficient way for it to produce sound naturally, free from tension and strain. Once you understand and implement these core techniques, you'll have the freedom and versatility to explore any genre with ease. Your starting point and your end goal are uniquely yours, and my commitment is to guide you every step of the way.

There’s No Such Thing as "Tone Deaf"

Bold statement, I know! One of my favorite things to do is work with those who might describe themselves as "tone deaf." I put that in quotations because I truly believe anyone can sing! Often, what's perceived as "tone deafness" is simply a lack of ear training and vocal coordination. It's a skill that can be learned, just like playing an instrument.

In our lessons, we'll embark on a journey of discovery that includes pitch recognition, training your ear to distinguish and reproduce notes accurately; interval training, understanding the relationships between different pitches; and polyphonic singing, developing the ability to hear and sing your part within a harmony. And, perhaps most importantly, we'll focus on building unwavering confidence in your own voice. It takes patience, dedication, and a supportive environment, and I'm here to provide all three. Together, we'll unearth your full potential and help you find immense joy in your personal musical journey!

“The end of all good music is to affect the soul.”
